Four Steps to Designing a Professional-Looking Sign

Beginning a sign campaign requires considering a number of different variables, but the most important of these is probably the actual design of your signs. On one end of the spectrum is the concern of your sign being too busy and on the other is that your sign just won’t stand out. Finding a balance between these extremes all while presenting your brand and message can be tricky so take a look at the following guidelines to get started:

1. Layout

You need to convey your message in a limited amount of time, so keep your layout straightforward and emphasize what is most important. Use larger sized lettering for the central point of your sign, whether it’s your company name or the services you offer. Don’t try to cram a whole lot of information onto the sign because people won’t have the time (or the patience) to read your sign for very long. Get to the point quickly.

2. Color

Chances are that if you own a business, you have a color set that people associate your business with, so you should use those colors. If you plan to put your logo on the sign, remember that you want your brand to stand out, so the logo’s background should wash out the logo itself. So for example, if you logo is primarily red, you don’t want to put it on a red background because that will make it difficult to recognize. Lastly, it’s typically advisable to limit the colors on your sign to two or three in order to make your sign look clean and professional.

3. Size

The size of your sign is important for a few reasons. First, and most obvious, is that you want your sign to be large enough that people can see it. Another reason is out of consideration for your clients or supporters.
