Why Formal Family Portrait Is Classic

Family portrait photography often demands for a more formal pose. Its goal is to capture unity, an essential aspect that keeps a family together. Professional portrait photographers use both technical and non-technical elements to depict such characteristic.

Technically speaking, how the portrait would look depends on the composition. Composition refers to how the key elements are put together to make up an interesting picture, or in this case to highlight the family’s unique identity as a group. On the not so technical aspect of portrait photography, professional photographers attain great composition by requesting the subjects to wear coordinated color tones for their clothing. Formal attires are already available in some photography studios that their clients can use, particularly those that specialize in photographing a group in their formal attire.

Although corporate attires are considered classic for formal family portrait, there are other ways to achieve a formal look without wearing tuxedos or corporate dresses. Thus, formal portrait can also be achieved by requesting the family to wear clothes that reflect their culture or religion, or anything that distinguishes them as a family.

For example, a Muslim family can wear clothing that would make them easily distinguishable. Islam requires women to wear modest clothes such as long shorts and skirts or the more traditional jilbab, a high-necked, lose robe that covers the arms and legs. Again, it’s important that the family’s color of clothing is well-coordinated.

Another important pointer in capturing group photography is highlighting the individual personality of each member of the family. To achieve this, photographers make sure that every member of the family feels good about the their dress and their overall appearance. If one or two of them feels not, it might have an impact on the composition the photographer has envisioned. This proves that a family portrait is only as interesting as each individual in the photograph.
