When An Artist Specializes In Dog Paintings

She was about eight years old when this female painter got her first dog. Sadly, the small Boston terrier died on that same year but it was able to leave a lasting impression on the girl. Nowadays, noble pets have a significant role in her life. She is an accomplished painter, specializing in portraits of dogs.

Many Sunday afternoons have been spent by her in the public library where she goes through every dog book and magazine she could find. You can say that she would have loved showing dogs in trials and dog shows as a professional dog handler. She was able to go to various dog shows as she spent her free time there drawing and sketching the animals at 13. About 16 was her age when a friend introduced her to painting with oils and creating dog portraits.

Although she is also great when it comes to painting landscapes, sea scapes, abstracts, and other subjects, she chose this specialization. Early in her career, she made and sold a number of dog portraits and this told her that her decision was the right one. Many of the early portraits were of dogs belonging to members of the family. She made a picture of their own Boston terrier that was displayed by a local pet shop after they put up a notice about her paintings.

There are two paintings she credits for a large measure of her progress. Her first painting was one of an amazing little mongrel restored by the animal humane association to health and adopted as a mascot called charlie black. The other is a picture of a handsome Alaskan malamute, champion phantom of the ice flue.

It is the head and expression that make the dog considering a Labrador retriever. It?s also very hard to paint a black dog, it’s hard to photograph one and even harder to paint one. An unusual picture is the painting she did of the statue of a jacket found in Tutankhamen?s tomb. In the background she painted appropriate Egyptian symbols.

On several occasion, people have asked her to make portraits of other pets including horses. It is her husband who gives tangible and psychological assistance. There was a time when he designed and made a table to hold her paints and brushes. Whenever she shows her work, she uses the specially crafted easels and display stands she made and stained herself. She came up with a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador which is her largest portrait.

Smoother dogs are easier to paint than the longer coated ones. The dogs are never posed. Dogs are not able to hold their heads just right. For one hour, she observes the animal and this allows her to remember details such as its sheen, the color of its coat, its typical stance, and the evident personality or character traits it may have. Many have said that she is talented in putting these characteristics onto the canvas.

Her portraits are based on snapshots given by the owners. If they cannot provide her with one, she takes the picture herself and then blows it up on the screen. I paint for the people, I let them choose the background and things like that. Sometimes, one chooses sceneries and then others choose plain ones. Because of her family commitments she is able to do only one portrait a month. I like to take a little vacation now and then catch up with my housework.

Pro photographers have known for years the wondrous enchanting ability to just capture a moment when they press the shutter at the right millisecond. Bright red and green and blue and gray roof colours flooded our senses as if a bucket-full of marbles had been tossed against the green and brown mountainside.

The sight was so full of vitality and virility that we could hardly talk with the vibrancy of it all.

That moment wasn’t planned. It just happened. Often such experiences can be imagined before the circumstance. As an example, you know a crop moon will be a magnificent sight, and you can make arrangements for shooting it by being in the right spot at the right time. The unpredictable can be made simply manageable with a little forethought.
