My Friend The Social Media Ruler

I have a friend that is a Social Media Queen. Before Social Media was the big thing to do online, she already had joined half a dozen social media sites and started three more! Her friends know that if something new is coming down the pike, she will be there already showing the rest of us how to do it.

Already in place, my girlfriend Lisa emailed the rest of us to quickly join her. While others online were finding out about all of this, we were in place and getting ready to start marketing on these new sites. But before we signed on the dotted line we asked Lisa why we should join her. She started telling us what this internet tool could accomplish for our online business.

Lisa explained that this was the newest thing to come on the scene for marketing online. That instead of emailing people until they were sick of hearing from you, or even worse spamming, that now you were going to make relationships with people. While it may seem like a slower way to do things, that in the long run these relationships would be better as they would be targeted.

She told us that through these new media groups people could get to know you if they were interested in what you were doing, before they jumped on your bandwagon. They could see what you were up to, and watch how you handled yourself. You could begin to build trust, which is what people look for when considering joining a group. Can they trust you?

We all know and trust Lisa, so of course we began to follow her. And we all learned that again she knew what she was talking about. You do build up relationships through this medium. It was more about whom you knew than what you know. It is slower, but relationships can be built and friendships forged.

It does not matter how many websites you have if no one sees them. This tool of the internet introduces you to other people who might like your product, and they know other people. Everyone likes to share what he or she likes. If they like you and feel they can trust you, they will follow you and bring their friends along.

One thing we learned from Lisa was to watch which groups we decided to join. There are so many, and she told us to look for a group that would be good for targeted prospects of what we were promoting. If you are selling cars you do not want to join a group for new moms! If you sign up for too many and cannot keep up with building the relationships, then you have wasted your energy. Sign up for fewer and work on building those relationships. Each of the groups seem to target different groups so you want to join ones that target people that would be good prospects for what you promote.

Social media is a tool for the savvy marketer to use. By thinking through what you want to promote, and looking at the various options out there of the different sites to join, you can make an informed decision on which one you fit into. Then become active on the site so people get to know you. That is the beginning of new relationships that will help you promote your venture, which is what these sites are all about.
