The number of people starting an internet business these days is pretty astronomical. It’s hard to blame themthe internet is booming, you can be your own boss, you can work from wherever you want and it doesnt cost much to get started. Put it all together and starting an internet business is anything but an original idea which means there are more options and offers looking for your money and dreams than you could possibly imagine.
That can make it very challenging for someone with little to no experience to know which business has a realistic chance of making money. Nonetheless, you can find one of the few good ones if you get educated on what to look forand what to avoid. Pay close attention to the 3 mistakes outlined belowthey will save you a lot of pain and frustration.
Here are the 3 biggest mistakes people make when starting an internet business:
1. They focus only on the money. What Im saying is, begin with the end in mind. Seriously consider whether the type of business youre looking to start suits you because its entirely possible to make a lot of money and be MISERABLE. For example, I frequently talk with people who would love to start a restaurant. If they really consider what goes into restaurant ownership “ extremely long hours including weekends, high turnover in employees, dealing difficult customers etc. etc. “ they might reconsider. Better to think about this now than after you own the restaurant.
2. They focus too much of their evaluation on the quality of the product. This seems like the logical thing to do. To someone with little business experience (or a lot of business experience with little success), its natural to assume that if the product is great, your job of selling it will be that much easieror even better, find a product that sells itself! Unfortunately thats not how it works. There are scores of awesome products and services that go unsold because so few people have any clue how to market and promote them effectively. It may surprise you, but its not really that important how great the product is you intend to promote “ look at McDonalds or pet rocks. Thats why the people who succeed in starting an internet business focus the majority of their evaluation on the marketing systems effectiveness and ability to train someone with little experience. Trust me, this will be the biggest factor determining whether you succeed in starting an internet business (aside from your personal ambition).
3. They are easily enticed by startups or ground floor opportunities. This is another one that seems to make sense on the surface. The optimistic side of us wants to believe that we found something new and original and that its surely going to be the next Microsoft or Google (and were in on the bottom “ woo hoo!). Unfortunately, 95% of businesses fail and that certainly includes those on the internet. What people are really looking for is a company that is on the verge of major growth.
